Straßen waren zu allen Zeiten der Schlüssel zur Erschließung neuer Räume und zum Austausch von Waren und Wissen. Als verbindendes Element zwischen Landschaften, Völkern und Kulturen gehören sie zu den Grundpfeilern gesellschaftlicher und wirtschaftlicher Entwicklung. Ziel des Kolloquiums war es, das Phänomen Straße interdisziplinär und aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven zu diskutieren. Ein besonderes Anliegen lag darin, über die nahe liegende Präsentation von einzelnen Straßentrassen, Magistralen oder von Straßenkategorien hinauszugehen und sowohl die räumliche als auch die soziologische und zeitliche Dimension des Verkehrsbauwerkes Straße zu betrachten. Wie wird der Kulturträger Straße in verschiedenen zeitlichen Epochen, in der Antike oder im Mittelalter, wahrgenommen? Welchen Stellenwert hatte das Reisen? Mit welchen Risiken und Mühen war Mobilität behaftet? Was kennzeichnet die Gegenwart, vor allem aber was die Zukunft der Straße? Die Autoren des vorliegenden Bandes besprechen diese Fragestellungen und versuchen mögliche Antworten aufzuzeigen
