On a longtemps fait des Confessions de Rousseau le texte fondateur d'un genre, l'autobiographie, que la critique distinguait des mémoires et d'autres formes à la première personne. Cet ouvrage, dans la ligne de la critique récente, remet en question ce clivage. Il présente une série de réflexions sur l'écriture de soi dans des formes textuelles aussi diverses que l'autobiographie spirituelle, le journal de voyage, la correspondance ou les factums, ressaisissant à nouveaux frais, et dans un contexte élargi, le geste rousseauiste. Il questionne ainsi la pertinence de la notion de genre autobiographique et contribue à une nouvelle cartographie des écritures de soi à l'âge classique.
