This international comparison investigates the relationship between social ties and national identity through the study of “mixed people,” defined as people whose parents were born in different countries. They allow us to analyze how the modern man defines him/herself nationally according to “membership” and “reference” groups. This research postulates, following the interactionist theory, that identity is the product of the interaction between oneself and others. To answer the question of the impact of national residency on national identity, it is necessary to compare between comparable countries, that have different histories of migration, different conceptions of the Nation, and different past integration policies. Therefore, this study focuses on France, the United Kingdom and Germany. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used to answer this research question. Identity discourses of approximately one hundred mixed people in these three countries and the analysis of their structural integration with the quantitative method using the TeO survey, the BHPS and SOEP panel were combined. This combined method highlights the complexity of the relationship between national contexts and social ties in the construction of national identity. This approach allows us to deepen the initial typology that France would represent a “civic” Nation, Germany an “ethno-cultural” Nation and the UK an “ethno-racial” one with respect to national identification
