Die Mehrzahl der herkömmlichen Ethiken beruft sich entweder auf allgemeingültige, unwandelbare Prinzipien, denen es pflichtgemäß zu folgen gilt, oder auf das Eigeninteresse, das durch individuelle wie gemeinschaftliche Zweckvernunft befördert wird. Die »Theorie der Freundschaft« nimmt dagegen das freundschaftliche Lieben zur Grundlage, das in zeitlich bedingten, endlichen Vollzügen Glücksstreben und Verbindlichkeit vereint.
