2003 stirbt der 21-jährige Sohn des französischen Opernregisseurs Michel Rostain plötzlich an einer Hirnhautentzündung. Der Vater ist verzweifelt, klammert sich an die benutzte Wäsche, um den Geruch des Sohnes festzuhalten, liest dessen E-Mails, versucht, restliche Lebenszeichen zu erhaschen und stellt sich endlich seiner Trauer, indem er die Geschichte seiner eigenen Trauer aus der Sicht seines Sohnes erzählt. Mit diesem Perspektivwechsel gelingt es ihm glaubwürdig und beeindruckend, trotz des Schmerzes genug Distanz zu wahren, um seine eigene Verzweiflung und seine Schuldgefühle über verpasste Gelegenheiten in der Beziehung zu seinem Sohn weder zu verschweigen noch zu ernst zu nehmen. Am Ende dieses Romans voller Liebe und Zuneigung, voller Schmerz und Traurigkeit steht die tröstliche Erkenntnis, dass es das Schlimmste ist, ein Kind zu verlieren, aber nicht das Ende. Für diesen Debütroman wurde der 68-jährige Rostain 2011 mit dem Prix Goncourt ausgezeichnet. Ein Buch, das bewegt.
