Feinripp-Unterhosen, Meerschweinchen, Schokoladentafeln, Müll, halbnackte Männerkörper, Küchenabflüsse, Handtaschen, Revolver, Damenfrisuren, Trockentücher – der Motivkosmos von Cornelius Völker (geb. 1965) ist äußerst vielfältig und zugleich äußerst banal. Der Maler verhilft alltäglichen Dingen (und Haustieren), die in der Kunstgeschichte bisher eher vernachlässigt wurden, zu bewundernder Bildwürdigkeit. Fasziniert von den Oberflächen, die sich ihm bieten und an denen er sich mittels dickem Farbauftrag und in virtuoser malerischer Manier abarbeitet, schafft Cornelius Völker großformatige Gemälde, die zwischen Abstraktion und Gegenstand, zwischen reiner Farbfeldmalerei und detailgetreuer Wirklichkeitsbeschreibung changieren. Die Villa Stuck in München zeigte vom 17. Februar bis zum 8. Mai 2011 die bisher umfangreichste Schau von Cornelius Völker. Die Ausstellung umfasst einen repräsentativen Überblick über Völkers Schaffen der letzten zwanzig Jahre und wird anschließend in Museen nach Ludwigshafen, Goslar und Wuppertal weiterwandern. Der die Ausstellung begleitende Katalog zeigt in über 170, größtenteils ganzseitigen Farbtafeln das Werk des Künstlers in einer bisher ungesehenen Bandbreite. Neben einem Interview von Michael Buhrs mit dem Maler enthält das Buch kunsthistorische Begleittexte und Essays von Stephan Berg, Magdalena Kröner, Bettina Ruhrberg und Reinhard Spieler
