So wie die Ukraine lange Zeit von Russland dominiert wurde, stand auch die Entwicklung des jungen Staates seit der Erlangung der Selbstständigkeit im Jahr 1991 im Schatten der Ereignisse im größeren Russland. Erst die so genannte "Orangene Revolution" hat das Augenmerk der westlichen Öffentlichkeit auf dieses zweitgrößte Land Europas gerichtet. Deshalb ist es zu begrüßen, dass mit dem Buch der beiden ausgewiesenen Kenner der Geschichte Osteuropas nun eine kompetente Darstellung der historischen Entwicklung vorliegt, die die Probleme des zwischen Ost- und Westbindung schwankenden Staates aus den historischen, ethnischen, kulturellen und wirtschaftlichen Gegebenheiten heraus erläutert. Während die ruhmreiche Vergangenheit (Kiever Rus) kursorisch abgehandelt wird, stehen die Ereignisse seit der Russischen Revolution im Zentrum der Betrachtung. Ältere Darstellungen wie A. Kappelers "Kleine Geschichte der Ukraine" (BA 9/94) können ersetzt werden. Trotz der Fülle an Details allgemein verständlich. Mit einem umfangreichen Anhang (Zeittafel, Biografien, Glossar, Literaturauswahl, Register).
