Klappentext: When a military coup led by General Augusto Pinochet deposed the Popular Unity government of socialist President Salvador Allende in 1973, many Chileans expected only a temporary departure from their country's longstanding democratic tradition. Now, more than ten years later, Pinochet's administration has proven to be the most durable in the nation's history. And in contrast to other military dictatorships, Chile's has concentrated power in Pinochet's position, to the extent that his government is more properly characterized as a dictatorship of the commander-in-chief. Most assessments of the military government have focused on its widespread violations of human rights. In this text, ten leading Latin American scholars offer a critical but dispassionate evaluation of the Chilean economy, society, and polity under the present regime. They take a broad view to provide the first comprehensive study of the changes, tensions, and conflicts that have accompanied this most exceptional period in Chilean history. Several chapters focus on the government's ultraorthodox freemarket economic and social policies. The authoritarian nature of the regime has allowed it to implement them without effective opposition. "It is no accident," the editors write, "that laissez-faire ultraliberalism has gone hand in hand with dictatorhip; it has, in fact, required it." Chile thus serves as an interesting test case of the pure application of orthodox models. Other chapters examine the government's military and foreign policies as well as the development of party, labor, and church opposition to the regime.
