Seit den neunziger Jahren laviert der Literaturbetrieb zwischen Hype und Flaute. Die Wiederkehr des Erzählens, die Pop-Literatur und eine Expansion literarischer Veranstaltungen sorgen für Präsenz, Publicity und Publikum. Der Buchmarkt dagegen stagniert und die öffentliche Hand kürzt ihre Mittel zur Förderung von Literatur und Autoren. Das Buch fragt daher nach der Funktion und Bedeutung privater Förderer in diesem Zusammenfall von Aufbruch und Krise. Auf der Basis breiter empirischer Recherchen werden erstmalig Strategien und Schwerpunkte der Förderung von zeitgenössischer Literatur durch Stiftungen und Unternehmen untersucht. Am Beispiel der bundesdeutschen Literaturhäuser wird nach möglichen Wechselwirkungen zwischen Finanzierungsstrukturen und Programmarbeit gefragt. Die Studie analysiert das nicht staatliche Engagement für Literatur ausgehend von der Theorie der Gabe in der Nachfolge von Marcel Mauss und entwickelt drei Modelle, um die verschiedenen Formen privater Literaturförderung zu systematisieren.
