Content: Die grundlegende Biographie Sackville-Wests von V. Glendinning ist hier zuletzt als Taschenbuchausgabe vorgestellt worden: BA 10/94. Über der Autorin besondere Beziehung zu V. Woolf unterrichtete detailliert S. Amrain: ID 35/94. Die vorliegende Briefausgabe (mit eingefügten Passagen Woolfs) ergänzt und bereichert sowohl die Literatur über die exzentrische (literarhistorisch aber sicher nicht weltbewegende) Vita als auch indirekt die über Virginia (eine Autorin von Weltgeltung) - deren "Gesammelte Briefe", 3bändig, im Rahmen der neuen Werkausgabe versprochen sind (vgl. u.a. BA 9/93). Die von der amerikanischen Woolf-Expertin De Salvo (vgl. ID 4/91) mitbetreute, von Leaska mit einer einfühlsam-instruktiven Einführung versehene Ausgabe ist ansprechend nobel gedruckt und mit einigen Fotos illustriert. Benutzerorientierte Bibliotheken werden wissen, welche Leserinnengruppe sie damit erfreuen können. (3)

Content: As a category in literature, "form" is a crucial source of conflict and insight. It is both a vehicle for literature’s "self-justification" (Selbstbegründung) and a focal point in associated discourse. This handbook unpacks the issue of "form" while shedding light on scholarly debates in their historic and systematic breadth. In doing so, it also considers discussion about form outside of literary studies.

Content: Form ist die wohl einflussreichste, sicher aber die beständigste Erkennungs- und Konfliktkategorie des literarischen Feldes. Wie kein anderes Konzept verbindet sie die Selbstbegründungen der Dichtung mit Diskursen über sie und stiftet ein Kontinuum, das gegenwärtige Modelle auf vergangene und eigene auf fremde zu beziehen erlaubt. Das Handbuch 'Literarische Form' beschreibt das Phänomen und die mit ihm verbundenen Debatten unter den Rubriken 'Formtheorie', 'Formverfahren' und 'Formkultur' und diskutiert sie in historischer und systematischer Breite – auch mit Blick auf fachdisziplinäre Formdiskurse jenseits der Literaturwissenschaft. Der Formbegriff reicht hierbei von der Mikroebene der literarischen Verfahren über Klassifikationskalküle bei der Gattungsbildung bis zu weltanschaulichen Konzepten und Pragmatiken. Zu diesem Kontext zählt auch die Genese der bedeutendsten Binäroppositionen, die - wie beispielhaft 'Materie vs. Form'- besonders wirkungsmächtig waren oder durch dynamische Konzepte - etwa 'Immersion und Agency' - ergänzt und ersetzt worden sind.
