Zanzibar est né de la mouvance intellectuelle de 1968 et prônant un idéal de conquête de liberté totale de création. S'érigeant contre le cinéma traditionnel, les films de Zanzibar sont caractérisés par un extraordinaire travail de dépouillement dans la mise en scène et la narration, et une recherche sans précédent sur la lumière, comme une quête de pureté.
