In den letzten Jahren hat sich die Aufmerksamkeit des Klinikers und des Biologen dem Porphyrin, bzw. dem ganzen Komplex der Porphyrine zugewandt, da diese Farbstoffe in zahlreichen, verwickelten Krankheitszuständen eine wichtige Rolle spielen. So finden wir in der Literatur viele Arbeiten über das Vorkommen der Porphyrine und deren Wirkung als Auslöser schwerster Organschädigungen oder als Produkt einer Störung des Pigmentstoffwechsels im menschlichen Organismus. Leider sind sich die Autoren sowohl über die Entstehung und die Funktion als auch über die Bedeutung dieser wichtigen Farbstoffe heute noch nicht einig. Wesentliche Fortschritte verzeichnet man dagegen auf dem Gebiete der Porphyrinchemie, wo durch systematische Untersuchungen der Nachweis, die Isolierung, die quantitative Bestimmung und Synthese einer ganzen Reihe von Porphyrinen erreicht werden konnte. Die exakte chemische Charakterisierung dieser Pigmente war für die weitere Entwicklung der Biologie der Porphyrine von entscheidender Bedeutung. Die vorliegende Monographie ist aus dem Bedürfnis nach einer kritischen und begründeten Darlegung der heutigen Lage der Porphyrinforschung entstanden. Dabei wurde nicht nur die Aufmerksamkeit auf das Problem der typischen und seit den Arbeiten GUNTHERS schon lange in ihrer Symptomatologie klargestellten Porphyrinkrankheit (der Porphyrie) gerichtet, sondern auch und noch vielmehr auf die Bedeutung des Porphyrinstoffwechsels im Rahmen der normalen und pathologischen Funktion des Gesamtorganismus hingewiesen
