Westberlin 1966. Aus Geheimdienstkreisen wird die Kripo informiert, dass eine antikommunistische Kampfgruppe, die Sabotage in der DDR verübte, jetzt einen Anschlag auf hochrangige Politiker vorbereiten könnte. Das Ziel könnte Willy Brandt sein, der den Wechsel in die Bundespolitik plant und für eine Verständigung mit der DDR steht. Otto Kappe wird zum Leiter einer Sondergruppe bestimmt, die das Attentat verhindern soll. Eine fast unlösbare Aufgabe in einem wahren Dschungel von Rechtsradikalen, linken Studenten, amerikanischen Geheimdiensten und anderen Akteuren, die nur ihre eigenen Interessen verfolgen. Der vielseitige Klaus Vater, Jahrgang 1946, Redakteur, Pressesprecher und Autor, steuert hier, nach "Am Abgrund" (ID-A 14/11), Kappes 29. Fall und seinen 2. Band zur Reihe "Es geschah in Berlin" bei (nach Horst Bosetzkys "Auf leisen Sohlen", ID-A 29/17). Es gelingt ihm sehr gut, den Geist der Umbruchzeit, die den Grundstein für weitreichende Veränderungen der Gesellschaft legte, authentisch einzufangen und in einem nie langweiligen Roman wiederzugeben.
