Nur wenige Konzerte erfreuen sich einer solch ungebrochenen Popularität wie Rachmaninows 2. Klavierkonzert c-Moll op. 18, mit dem er sich 1901 geradezu rauschhaft aus einer Schaffenskrise zu befreien vermochte. Solist dieser Aufnahme ist Dong Hyek Lim, der vom BBC Symphony Orchestra unter Alexander Vedernikov begleitet wird. Er kombiniert das 2. Klavierkonzert mit den 40 Jahre später entstandenen Sinfonischen Tänzen in Rachmaninows eigener Version für zwei Klaviere, die dieser für das Zusammenspiel mit dem damals noch jungen Vladimir Horowitz erstellte. In dieser Aufnahme spielt an Lims Seite seine Mentorin Martha Argerich. Die drei Sinfonischen Tänze sind Rachmaninows letztes Werk. In ihnen zitiert er eigene Werke und lässt den dritten Tanz mit der Synthese des Dies Irae (symbolisch für den Tod) mit dem Halleluja der orthodoxen Liturgie (für die Auferstehung) enden. Wer Rachmaninows 2. Klavierkonzert nicht im Bestand hat, sollte hier unbedingt zugreifen, das Werk zählt zum absoluten Grundbestand. pr
