La novela se abre tanto a la realidad que sus protagonistas engañan, asesinan con brutalidad y vileza, tratan del amor con una vulgaridad notable, duermen, comen, van a prisión por falsas delaciones, gastan dinero en abogados que los libren de sus condenas o piden favores a nobles con nombre y apellidos para que intercedan por ellos.
