Aus den Augen, aus dem Sinn, heisst es im Volksmund. Das gilt auch für viele Sportarten. Denn wer spricht beispielsweise heute noch vom Fuchsprellen, das im 17. Jahrhundert äusserst beliebt war? Damals schleuderten Damen und Herren der feinen Gesellschaft mithilfe von Netzen und Tüchern Füchse und anderes Waldgetier in möglichst grosse Höhen. Und wer kennt heutzutage noch das Feuerwerksboxen, bei dem Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts Männer in speziell angefertigte Asbestanzüge gesteckt wurden, an denen pyrotechnische Utensilien befestigt waren. Oder das Zentrifugalkegeln, das etwa zur gleichen Zeit eine patente Lösung präsentierte, um die Freuden des Bowling in jedes Heim zu bringen, allerdings auf Kosten der Zielgenauigkeit und damit der strukturellen Unversehrtheit von Wohnzimmerwänden ... Unzählige Sportarten sind (aus gutem Grund) der Zeit zum Opfer gefallen, und doch geben sie Aufschluss darüber, mit welch überbordender Fantasie und tollkühnem Mut die Menschen einst ihre Freizeit gestaltet haben. Wobei der Verfasser dringend davon abrät, die vorgestellten Sportarten selbst auszuprobieren
