Österreich-Ungarn. Adam Fallmerayer ist Stationschef eines kleinen Bahnhofs auf der Südbahnstrecke. Das Leben an der Seite seiner Frau und der gemeinsamen Kinder ist geprägt von Monotonie. Er träumt von einem besseren und anderen Leben. Als die schöne Gräfin Anja Walewska infolge eines Zugunglücks einige Tage in seinem Haus verbringt, scheint sich sein Wunsch zu erfüllen. Doch die russische Adelige fährt weiter zu ihrem Mann nach Rom, und für Fallmerayer bleibt nur ein Dankesbrief. Der Stationschef denkt weiterhin so oft er kann an die attraktive Frau. Während des 1. Weltkrieges verlässt der Familienvater Frau und Kinder, folgt der Russin und begleitet sie als deren Geliebter an die französische Riviera. Anja ist im sechsten Monat schwanger, da erfährt sie, dass ihr vermisster Mann aus dem Krieg zurückkehrt … Regisseur und Drehbuchautor Walter Davy legt mit der Verfilmung des packenden Joseph-Roth-Dramas aus der Zeit der kaiserlichen und königlichen Monarchie Österreich-Ungarn eine außergewöhnliche Literaturverfilmung vor. Der Film blättert nicht nur ein tragisches Schicksal auf, sondern ist auch schauspielerisch und inszenatorisch bemerkenswert. Große Gefühle, gepaart mit Nostalgie und Zeitkritik, gute Darsteller, historisch authentisch, anspruchsvoll. Ein Klassiker unter den Roth-Adaptionen.
