Kai: "Das moderne China", ID-A 13/14) will gängige Einteilungen auflösen und so das farbige Mosaik unter dem "monochronen Putz der Nationalgeschichtsschreibung" freilegen. Vogelsang, Professor für Sinologie in Hamburg, distanziert sich von der Vorstellung der essenziellen Einzigartigkeit der chinesischen Geschichte und zeigt in kurzen vergleichenden Exkursen, dass in China für sehr ähnliche Probleme oft auch ähnliche Lösungen gefunden wurden. Im Vordergrund steht somit nicht die vermeintlich kontinuierliche Ausformung einer einheitlichen chinesischen Kultur, sondern die oft verdeckte Vielfältigkeit dieses Landes und die vielen Brüche, Widersprüche und Ambivalenzen. Deshalb ist es auch keine monumentale Darstellung mit dem üblichen Anmerkungsapparat, sondern eine oft eher essayistische Betrachtung, die aber gerade deshalb sehr stimulierend wirkt. Das Buch ist als Einführung konzipiert, kann aber auch von Eingeweihten mit großem Gewinn gelesen werden. (1 S)
