Das "deutsch" im Untertitel zielt nicht allein auf die Sprache; aber es ist keineswegs nur das Politische, nach dem der Herausgeber in seiner Gedichtauswahl sucht. Es geht ihm vielmehr um das "Lebensgefühl in einer Gesellschaft sowie die Grundlagen", die ihm "Pate standen" - vergleichbar der Fragestellung, der er in "Die deutsche Seele" (ID-G 48/11) mit Thea Dorn nachgegangen ist. Wagner spürt seinem Thema von Walter v.d. Vogelweide bis in die Gegenwart nach und geht dabei gern kontrastiv vor - sei es, dass er auf Parodien zurückgreift oder Weltanschauliches aufeinandertreffen lässt (etwa bei Agnes Miegel/Johannes R. Becher oder Johannes Chr. Günther/Ernst Jandl). Die Abschnitte sind mit "An den Mond" oder "Tränen des Vaterlands" überschrieben, "Dämonen der Städte" oder "Nach dem Weltende", und als Subtext ist das Thema Tod allgegenwärtig. Gelegentlich fragt sich der Leser zwar, was dies oder jenes Gedicht zum Thema beiträgt, doch die Auswahl des banatstämmigen Lyrikers und Romanautors (zuletzt "Belüge mich", ID-B 12/11) ist ambitioniert im Sinne des Entlegenen, das den intimen Literaturkenner verrät.
