ARTE ehrt den brasilianischen Stararchitekten und Künstler Oscar Niemeyer, der am 15. Dezember, seinen 100. Geburtstag feiert. Niemeyer war führend am Bau Brasilias beteiligt. Am 21. April 2000 beging Brasilien den 500. Jahrestag seiner Entdeckung und den 40. Jahrestag der Gründung seiner Hauptstadt Brasilia. Der brasilianische Architekt und Künstler Oscar Niemeyer war führend am Bau Brasilias beteiligt. Mit ihrer klaren, kraftvoll-optimistischen Architektur verbindet sich sein Name bis heute. Der heute 100-Jährige widmete sein Leben der Architektur und blickt auf ein ungewöhnlich umfangreiches Lebenswerk zurück. Der Mann, der die Frauen liebt und an sozialistische Ideale glaubt, spricht in diesem Film über Brasilien und das französische Exil während der Diktatur, über Freiheit und Erinnerung, über Le Corbusier, Kubitschek, Castro und Malraux, über den Traum eines Architekten und die Hoffnung eines Jahrhunderts. Brasilia, die Reißbrettstadt, ist weltweit einzigartig in ihrer Entstehungsgeschichte, in ihrer Größe und ihrer Bedeutung. Von Anfang an provozierte Brasilia heftige Emotionen, wurde bewundert und geliebt, aber auch abgelehnt und verachtet. Inzwischen wurde die Stadt in das Weltkulturerbe der UNESCO aufgenommen. Das Jahr 2007 ist für Brasilia ein besonderes Jahr: 1957, vor 50 Jahren, begannen mitten im Dschungel die Bauarbeiten. Und Oscar Niemeyer, der Architekt, der die Stadt geschaffen hat, wird 100 Jahre alt. Für den renommierten Schweizer Regisseur Christoph Schaub Anlass, dieser Ikone der Moderne einen filmischen Besuch abzustatten. Brasilia ist in der Architekturgeschichte einzigartig, eine Stadt für eine halbe Million Menschen, die aus einer Planung entstanden ist. Für die Architektur zeichnet Oscar Niemeyer allein verantwortlich. Er gehörte schon in den 30er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts zu den wichtigsten Architekten Brasiliens und heute - dank Brasilia - zu den bedeutendsten der Welt. Er sagt provokativ: "Architektur ist zufällig wie der Traum." Oscar Niemeyer, der in diesem Jahr 100 Jahre alt wird, erinnert sich in seinem Atelier in Rio de Janeiro an "sein" Abenteuer Brasilia. Brasilia zu bauen, das war wie ein Rausch: 50.000 Bauarbeiter machten die Utopie von der neuen Kapitale in drei Jahren zur Realität, 24 Stunden am Tag und sieben Tage die Woche. Einer der 50.000 Bauarbeiter war der damals 15-jährige Raimundo Bento de Araujo. Für Raimundo ist die Stadt ein Museum der Erinnerung. In der Dokumentation erzählt er von seinen Erinnerungen. Brasilia wurde mitten in eine unberührte Buschlandschaft gebaut. Ein einmaliger Kraftakt, an dem die ganze Nation beteiligt war - angetrieben von der Hoffnung auf ein modernes Leben, auf Wohlstand und Fortschritt. Eindrückliches Archivmaterial der Bauarbeiten und der Eröffnungsfeierlichkeiten geben dem Zuschauer einen sehr emotionalen Einblick. In erster Linie ist die Dokumentation ein Architektur-Porträt der Stadt Brasilia und macht die Stadt einerseits in ihrem urbanistischen Konzept und anderseits in ihrer stringenten und modernen Architektursprache erfahrbar.
