Durch ihre Lage waren antike Hafenstädte wichtige Knotenpunkte innerhalb der mittelmeerweiten Kommunikation und stellten somit die entscheidenden Schnittstellen zwischen den Lebensräumen Land und Wasser dar. Die Untersuchung beschäftigt sich mit der städtebaulichen Entwicklung ausgewählter mediterraner Hafenorte. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage, wie stark die Lage an Küste und Meer die Physiognomie und die funktionale Gliederung einer Stadt beeinflussten. Der Fokus liegt auf dem östlichen Mittelmeerraum von frühhellenistischer Zeit bis in die späte römische Kaiserzeit.〈ger〉
