"Eine Kurtisane verdreht dem Hofstaat um Herrschersohn Lorenzo den Kopf, sodass dieser den Aufstand gegen Kirche und den Ältestenrat probt und die Liebe über alles Geistliche stellt. Die Stadt wird von der Pest (in Gestalt einer Wahnsinnigen) heimgesucht, nicht zuletzt um einen abtrünnigen Einsiedlermönch zur Räson zu bringen. Eindrücklicher Stummfilm nach einem Drehbuch von Fritz Lang, dem die Dekadenz der Renaissance sowie Edgar Allan Poes morbide Kurzgeschichte "Die Maske des roten Todes" als Inspirationsquellendiente. Vorrangig ein opulenter Ausstattungsfilm, der in der Lasterhaftigkeit der herrschenden Schicht im Florenz des 16. Jahrhunderts schwelgt, begeistern vor allem die künstlerisch ambitionierten Montagesequenzen.
