Im letzten Drittel des 19. Jahrhunderts wird die Stadt Berlin sowohl zur Hauptstadt des Deutschen Reiches als auch zur internationalen Metropole. Diese parallelen Entwicklungen, angesiedelt zwischen Nationalismus und Kosmopolitismus, schlagen sich auch im Geschehen auf den Bühnen der neuen Welt- und "Theaterhauptstadt" Berlin nieder. Insbesondere das florierende internationale Gastspielwesen darf dabei als Spiegel von nationalisierenden und internationalisierenden Strömungen gesehen werden. Ziel dieses Buches ist es, diese Strömungen, die sich, wie gezeigt wird, nur auf den ersten Blick auszuschließen scheinen, anhand des Beispiels der Rezeption der Gastspiele der italienischen Virtuosin Eleonora Duse in den 1890er-Jahren nachzuzeichnen und dadurch sowohl die Wichtigkeit des bisher kaum untersuchten Gastspielwesens für die Theatergeschichte des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts herauszustellen als auch die Perspektive auf das durch einen Kulturwandel geprägte Theater Berlins vor 1900 zu erweitern.
