Osprey combat aircraft 74
Content:
This final volume in the trilogy on the Junkers Ju 87 Stuka - the aircraft that, more than any other, was the very epitome of Nazi Blitzkrieg - completes Osprey's operational history of the Luftwaffe's infamous dive-bomber of World War 2. The book charts its fortunes in the hardest theatre of all: the war against the Soviet Union. The fearsome reputation that the Stuka had enjoyed in the opening months of the war, but which was shattered over the English Channel in the summer of 1940, was restored the moment the invasion of the Soviet Union was launched. Against a demoralised enemy, the Ju 87 scored a string of spectacular successes. Inevitably, however, as the Soviet Union slowly gathered strength, the Stuka units would find themselves outnumbered, outfought, and - with but a few exceptions - relegated to operating under cover of darkness by the autumn of 1943. The days of the dive-bomber were finally over. The Schlacht, or ground-attack, aircraft now ruled the skies above the battlefields. (AUT)
