Festungsbauten werden für den speziellen militärischen Gebrauch in Friedens- und Kriegszeiten planvoll und weiträumig angelegt. Dieser Band enthält Aufsätze, denen Vorträge zugrunde liegen, die auf der Jahrestagung der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Festungsforschung 2005 in Germersheim gehalten wurden. Unter dem Leitthema "Leben in und mit Festungen" wurden abseits vom Festungskrieg so unterschiedliche Fragen behandelt wie Konversion, Bewuchs in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart, Rayongesetzgebung und Lebenssituationen, insbesondere von Frauen, in Festungen sowie aktuelle Nutzung von Festungsanlagen.
