Smutje Brown und Kaschmadi, zwei unbeschriebene Blätter, entpuppen sich als die geheimnisvollen Hauptfiguren einer bis zum Schluß rätselhaften Geschichte um die "Singenden Ratten", einer berüchtigten Piratenbande. Die recht aufregende Schiffsreise endet wiederum unter Polizeischutz, aber anders, als der gespannte Leser denkt. Kaschmadi, der braune Schiffsjunge auf der "Racing Rambler", ist nicht nur ewig hungrig auf einen "Nachschlag" beim Schiffskoch, sondern ebenso auf Neuigkeiten über den rätselhaften Koch. Seine größte Neuigkeit weiß er effektvoll und nicht ohne Wirkung an den biederen Kapitän Drinkwater zu verkaufen. Er entlarvt den Übeltäter für die seltsamen Zwischenfälle beim Geheimtransport nach Cissimaio. Aber irren ist menschlich. Das trifft sowohl auf Kaschmadi, auf Mr. Brown und nicht zuletzt auch auf den Kapitän Drinkwater zu.
