Die Emotionswissenschaftlerin analysiert, warum Gefühle vielen Menschen heute fremd geworden sind (10% der Bevölkerung = gefühlsblind) und welche Ursachen das hat. Im Verlauf einer emotionalen Bestandsaufnahme definiert sie Gefühle als Wahrnehmung von Emotionen, die mental bewertet werden müssen. Oft handle es sich um unbewusst verarbeitete emotionale Reize. Man sollte sie möglichst bewusst wahrnehmen, verstehen, tolerieren, regulieren und adäquat ausdrücken. Durch negative Kindheitserfahrungen (ohne sichere Bindung, emotionale Vernachlässigung) können Gefühle zum Problem werden, was sich als Borderline-Persönlichkeitsstörung, Autismus oder Depression äussern kann. Es folgen Kapitel über Gefühlsblinde und über das Erlernen angemessener Gefühle (z.B. durch emotionsfokussierte Therapie). Ferner wird man durch eine praktische Übung angeleitet, Kontakt zu eigenen Gefühlen aufzunehmen und erklärt, wie man Gefühle ausdrückt, reguliert, schreibend reflektiert und transformiert.
