Note: Kombinatorische Optimierungsprobleme zeichnen sich einerseits durch eine wohlstrukturierte Problemstellung, andererseits aber durch eine fur praxisrelevante Fragestellungen sehr große Zahl möglicher Handlungsalternativen aus. Gerade im Bereich der Produktion und betriebli­ chen Logistik sind derartige Optimierungsprobleme häufig anzutreffen (neben Problemen der Tourenplanung z.B. Fragen der optimalen Bearbeitungsreihenfolge von Aufträgen auf Ma­ schinen, der Verschnittminimierung oder der Containerbeladung). Ihr Vorteilliegt in der inter­ subjektiven Nachvollziehbarkeit von Handlungsalternativen und Zielfunktionen, weshalb die relative Qualität der Handlungsalternativen unabhängig von persönlichen Präferenzen bewertet werden kann. Der Einsatz klassischer Optimierungsverfahren des Operations Research zur Lösung Kombina­ torischer Optimierungsprobleme scheitert meist an dem mit der Problemgröße exponentiell wachsenden Rechenaufwand. In der Praxis wird daher häufig auf heuristische Verfahren ausgewichen, die eine Erreichung der optimalen Lösung nicht mehr sicherstellen, dafur aber weniger rechenintensiv sind. Seit etwa funfzehn Jahren werden in der Literatur Problemlösungsverfahren diskutiert, die zwar auch in die Klasse der heuristischen Verfahren eingeordnet werden müssen, die jedoch klassische problemspezifische Heuristiken in ihrer Ergebnisqualität vielfach übertreffen (und zudem wesentlich flexibler bezüglich Modifikationen der Problemstellung sind). Es handelt sich hierbei um Verfahren, die in Anlehnung an bestimmte natürliche Prozesse entwickelt wurden: So versuchen genetische Algorithmen (GA), durch Imitation der biologischen Evolution die Suche nach einer annähernd optimalen Lösung zu bewerkstelligen. Das sogenannte Simulated Annealing (SA) zieht hingegen eine Analogie zwischen dem Lösen eines Optimierungspro­ blems und dem Abkühlen von Materie in ihren niedrigsten energetischen Zustand
