Georg Brecher, Journalist und Gelegenheits-Schriftsteller, führt eine Reportage in den Uran-Bergbau der Wismut. Unter dem Eindruck der harten Arbeit unter Tage und der Begegnung mit den Kumpeln überdenkt Brecher sein bisheriges Leben. Ulrich Theins Film entstand im Kontext des kulturpolitischen Kahlschlags nach dem 11. Plenum des ZK der SED im Dezember 1965, der eine deutliche Zäsur in der Jugend- und Kulturpolitik der DDR bedeutete: zahlreiche Filme, Theaterstücke, Bücher und Musikgruppen verboten. Auch die Dreharbeiten zu "Columbus 64" mussten unterbrochen werden und es dauerte Monate, bis Thein wieder an den Film gelassen wurde. Theins Argumente mit seinem Film die "revolutionäre Gesellschaftsentwicklung" in der DDR zeigen zu wollen halfen indes nicht, denn nach Fertigstellung fiel sein Werk der Zensur zum Opfer: Es wurde gekürzt, nachsynchronisiert und nach einmaliger Ausstrahlung in der DDR verboten.
