Erzähltheorie als Untersuchungsmethode ist in der Japanologie noch weitgehend unbeachtet. Die Autorin untersucht die Erzählungen des japanischen Schriftstellers Tayama Katai (1871-1930). Seine wichtigsten Werke entstanden in der Meiji-Zeit (1868-1912) an einer Bruchstelle der literarischen Entwicklung – dem Wechsel von der klassischen Schriftsprache zur modernen Literatursprache. Die Studie durchleuchtet die Erzählstrategie Tayama Katais und seinen Versuch, wahrheitsgetreu zu erzählen, woraus eine Ausschaltung des Erzählers resultierte. Ausserdem gibt sie Aufschluss über die Entstehung von Erzählformen in Japan um 1907-1908, die auch in Europa anfangs des 20. Jahrhunderts neu auftraten.
