Familienforschung, Ahnenforschung, Genealogie, Geschlechterkunde, Sippenkunde ... die Forschungsdisziplin ist unter verschiedensten Bezeichnungen bekannt. Immer geht es jedoch um Familie, Vorfahren und Verwandtschaft. Für die einen ist es (Hilfs-)Wissenschaft, für die anderen ein interessantes Hobby. Doch wie haben sich diese Disziplin, ihre Arbeitsweisen und Schwerpunktsetzungen eigentlich entwickelt? Wer waren ihre Akteure und welche Ziele verfolgten sie? Am Beispiel der Vereinsgeschichte der „Westfälischen Gesellschaft für Genealogie und Familienforschung“ wird hier die Geschichte der Genealogie im 20. Jahrhundert und darüber hinaus untersucht. Von der Gründungszeit in den 1920er Jahren, über die Einbindung der genealogischen Vereine in das System der nationalsozialistischen Sippenkunde und die vielfältigen Bemühungen um die Fortsetzung der Familienforschung in der Nachkriegszeit bis hin zu den grundlegenden Veränderungen durch die Digitalisierung kann die Entwicklung der Gesellschaft anhand eines reichhaltigen Quellenfundus nachgezeichnet werden. Im Fokus stehen dabei u.a. Fragen danach, wie sich Vernetzungen ausgestalteten und wie sich Praktiken sowie Techniken genealogischer Recherche veränderten.
