Nachdem die Durchrechnung des Heliumatoms ergeben hat, daß die Bohrsche Atomtheorie unvereinbar ist mit den Gesetzen der klassischen Mechanik, ist eine Revision der Grundlagen der modernen Physik unvermeidlich geworden, denn das Turmhaus des periodischen Systems mit seinen 92 Stockwerken kann nicht auf Sand, sondern nur auf einem felsenfesten Fundament gebaut werden. In der heutigen Physik schwankt aber alles und steht nichts mehr fest. Das 19. Jahrhundert hatte seine Plage nur mit der Wellentheorie des Äthers, dessen Natur Unnatur schien, und der so viele Eigenschaften - so viele Widersprüche in sich selber zeigte. Das 20. Jahrhundert brachte dann neben dem alten noch das neue Rätsel der Quantentheorie. 25 Jahre angestrengtester Arbeit konnten inzwischen den Abgrund zwischen jener Wellentheorie und dieser Quantentheorie nicht überbrücken: beide sind gleich richtig, unzweifelhaft, und schließen sich doch wechselseitig aus. Dazu kommt, daß nach wie vor das Wesen der Schwerkraft und der Elektrizität in völliges Dunkel gehüllt ist. Denn die allgemeine Relativitätstheorie gibt nicht eine Erklärung des Wesens, sondern nur eine Beschreibung des Wirkens der Gravitation, und die Formeln einer fünfdimensionalen Welt deuten uns ebensowenig den Mechanismus des Elektrons, das als Träger der elementaren elektrischen Ladung und Wirker der Fäden im elektromagnetischen Feldnetz denn doch zu kompliziert ist, um als unerklärbares Urphänomen zu befriedigen. Wir nennen nur noch die relativistischen Namen: Massenveränderlichkeit, Raumverkürzung, Zeitdehnung und sehen: die theoretische Physik von heute scheint ein unlösbarer gordischer Knoten
