"Der erste Teil der [...] Dokumentation über Deutschlands Wiederaufbau zeigt, von welchen Visionen Städteplaner und Architekten von Hamburg über Bremen, Köln, Essen, Frankfurt und Erfurt bis nach Ulm oder Regensburg geleitet waren. Immens einflussreich war dabei der Stadtplaner Rudolf Hillebrecht aus Hannover, der seine Heimatstadt besonders radikal umgestaltet hat und damals zum Vorbild in ganz Westdeutschland wurde. In der DDR haben die gleichen städtebaulichen Leitlinien von der autogerechten Stadtlandschaft gewirkt wie im Westen, nur hinkte man dem Westen rund zehn Jahre hinterher. Man ging hier ebenso rüde mit historischen Bauten um. Ein besonders extremes Beispiel ist Bernau in der Nähe von Berlin. Rund 2.000 alte Häuser wurden zugunsten genormter Plattenbauten noch Anfang der 1980er Jahre abgerissen. Der Abriss letzter Reste der historischen Innenstädte nach dem Krieg wurde selten mit der Kamera dokumentiert. [...] Umso wertvoller sind die Funde, die eine umfangreiche Archivrecherche für die Dokumentation zu Tage brachte. Bislang unveröffentlichte Farbfilme von 1948, aufgenommen von einem amerikanischen Besatzungsoffizier, zeigen außerdem Deutschland an der Schwelle zum Wiederaufbau: was zerstört, aber auch, was noch vorhanden war.
