Die Studie analysiert die Wechselbeziehungen zwischen kollektiver und individueller Identität von politisch motivierten Auswanderern im 19. Jahrhundert. Anhand transnationaler Perspektiven detailliert aufgearbeiteter Biografien wird der Frage nachgegangen, welche Auswirkungen die Emigration auf Einstellungen und Überzeugungen eines Menschen besitzt. Hinsichtlich dieser Fragestellung werden neue Erkenntnisse durch die Analyse sowohl kollektiver Einflussfaktoren als auch individueller Lebenswirklichkeiten gewonnen: Die politisch-gesellschaftlichen Ereignisse von drei wesentlichen Auswanderungsphasen liefern den Ereignishorizont, in dem durch ausgewählte Biografien beharrende und variable Tendenzen des Identitätsbewusstseins dokumentiert werden.
