Durch die Einführung neuer Baustoffe und neuer Bauverfahren haben sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten auch die Bauarten, die Strukturen der raumumschließenden Wände, Decken und Dächer grundlegend geändert. An die Stelle vorwiegend einschichtiger Außenwände aus Mauerziegeln sind Bauteile mit vielfaltig differenziertem Schichtaufbau getreten, in denen jeder Schicht eine besondere Funktion zugeteilt ist. Ähnlich verlief die Entwicklung bei den Dächern, wo das durch Jahrhunderte bewährte Ziegeldach auf einer tragenden Holzkonstruktion vom Flachdach mit seinem mehr oder weniger komplizierten Schichtaufbau zeitweilig stark zurückgedrängt wurde. Die bauphysikalischen Probleme solcher Entwicklungen wurden spät erkannt. Oft bedurfte es erst einer Kette von Bauschäden, um Forschung und Lehre aufmerksam werden zu lassen. Inzwischen hat die "Bauphysik" Eingang gefunden in die Stoffgebiete, die in den Fachbereichen Architektur und Bauingenieurwesen an den Technischen Universitäten, Technischen Hochschulen und Fachhochschulen gelehrt werden. Häufig ist dabei die Bauphysik ein Teil der Baukonstruktionslehre, wie sie bis zum Vorexamen abgehandelt wird. Diese Verflechtung wird auch in dem vorliegenden Studienskript deutlich. Es zeigt nach einer Behandlung der bauphysikalischen Grundlagen der Wasserdampfdiffusion, in welcher Weise diese für praktische Berechnungen im Zusammenhang mit der konstruktiven Ausbildung von Wänden und Dächern genutzt werden können. Ein besonderer Abschnitt versucht zudem die Konsequenzen, die aus der Kenntnis diffusionstechnischer Vorgänge für die Baukonstruktion gezogen werden konnen, zu formulieren.
