Stressbeladene Umstände führen auf der physiologischen Ebene zu den Verhaltensalternativen 'Kampf' oder 'Flucht' ('töten' oder 'getötet werden'); das mentale Äquivalent ist die Furcht vor möglicherweise lebensbedrohlichen Situationen oder auch die Angst vor dem Phänomen des Todes als solchem.Annegret von Wietersheim fragt nach den Umständen, die Menschen dazu veranlassen, Mitmenschen oder Tiere zu töten, und fokussiert dabei das Thema des Tötens in beruflichen Kontexten. Die Analyse wird bewusst auf Menschen beschränkt, die berufsbedingt zum Töten berechtigt sind, eine entsprechende Ausbildung haben und unter berufsständiger oder institutioneller Kontrolle stehen. Terroristinnen, Psychopathinnen oder Beziehungstäterinnen sind also eindeutig von der Untersuchung ausgeschlossen.Im Einzelnen geht der Band der Berufsproblematik von Soldatinnen, Polizistinnen, Ärztinnen, Tierärztinnen, Schlachterinnen, Jägerinnen, Schäferinnen und Fischerinnen, im historischen Kontext auch von Henkern nach. Um diese Berufsgruppen genauer vorzustellen, werden sowohl gesetzliche, institutionelle und traditionelle Kontexte einbezogen als auch literarische Bezüge hergestellt. Ergänzt wird dies durch Gespräche mit Personen aus den jeweiligen Berufen.Oft wird die belastende Situation des Tötens thematisiert - ob es der Metzger in den frühen Morgenstunden im Schlachthof ist oder die Tierärztin beim Einschläfern eines Hundes. Und doch entsteht auch ein ambivalentes Bild: In Einzelinterviews betonten beispielsweise Schlachter die 'Normalität' ihres Berufs, während andere erkennen liessen, dass das Töten von (Gross-)Tieren jedes Mal eine Ausnahmesituation für sie darstellte. Die Autorin rückt daher die Interpretationen von problematischen Einzelaspekten in den Vordergrund, wobei sie versucht, die Auswirkung des Tötens auf die psychische Befindlichkeit derjenigen, die töten, nachzuvollziehen und zu kontextualisieren
