Wladimir und Estragon, zwei Landstreicher, sind auf ein düsteres, ausgestorbenes Plateau ausgesetzt. Sie warten auf "Godot", von dem niemand weiß, ob und wo er existiert. Jeweils am Schluß der beiden Akte des Stückes vertröstet ein kleiner Bub die Vagabunden, daß Herr Godot morgen ganz bestimmt eintreffen werde. Das Ende rollt immer wieder zum Beginn zurück - ein Kreislauf des absoluten Stillstands: der Mythos von Sisyphos"- bei Camus hat sich hier zum szenischen Alptraum verdichtet. In diese hoffnungslose, vom unaufhörlichen Selbstbetrug aufrecht erhaltene Welt bricht Pozzo ein, das Sinnbild brutalster Gewalt, der sein Opfer Lucky, die tiefste Entwürdigung des Menschen, an der Leine mit sich führt. Auf Befehl muß dieses menschliche Wrack ohne Sinn und Ausdruck - eine Wortflut unzusammenhängender Begriffe von sich, Sprach-Kehricht zerbröckelnde Sinnbild-Abfälle unserer Kulturüberlieferung, ein gespenstisches Chaos unausgegorener Möglichkeiten und letzte Abbauteilchen einer atomisierten Geisteswelt. Die Landstreicher schließen sich dem seltsamen Paar nicht an, das in quälender Gegenseitigkeit Godot in sich gefunden hat. Wladimir und Estragon warten weiter, bewahren sich die Unschuld des Untätigseins, indem sie Verantwortlichkeit und Rechtfertigung für sich und die Welt ins Unfaßbare - Godot - projizieren.
