Peter Hyoguchi und Duffy Hecht schrieben die Geschichte der 13-jährigen Tessa, die zusammen mit ihrer Mutter Christine obdachlos wird, als diese ihren Job verliert. Sie werden aus der Wohnung geworfen, als sie vier Monate mit der Miete im Rückstand sind. Es beginnt der Alptraum, śein oder zwei Nächteů auf der Couch bei Freunden zu verbringen. Später schlafen sie am Strand und schließlich auf dem Rücksitz ihres Autos. Die Mutter versucht, genug Geld zusammenzubekommen, um eine Anzahlung für eine neue Wohnung zu leisten, aber aus der Spirale gibt es kein Entrinnen. Was die Situation noch schwieriger macht, ist, dass die Geschichte in der extrem reichen Stadt Santa Barbara spielt, und dort kann es einfach keine armen Leute geben. Das glaubt jedenfalls Tessa, die vergeblich versucht, ihre Lebensumstände vor ihren Freunden in der Schule geheimzuhalten. (Kathleen Mclnnis) Es gibt so viele Leute, die Geschichten erzählen wollen und nicht Zugang zu Millionen Dollar haben. Sie sind wie ich mit der Videokamera aufgewachsen, die sie als Notizbuch verwenden. Es war an der Zeit, Hollywood zu zeigen, dass wir auch eine Stimme haben, die es zu beachten gilt. Ich sah The Blair Witch Project, als ich für den Katalog des Santa Barbara Film Festivals Inhaltsangaben schrieb. Ich sah ihn, ohne etwas darüber zu wissen. Das war, bevor der ganze Hype losbrach. Ich war total von den Socken. Ich dachte, wenn man mich als Filmemacher dazu bringen kann, alles zu glauben, was in dem Film vorgeht, dann müsste ich das auch mit meiner eigenen Geschichte schaffen: dem Publikum vorzumachen, alles sei real, damit es sich mehr mit den Charakteren identifiziert. Viele Leute glauben ja, alles, was mit Video aufgenommen ist, sei real. Ich gebe zu, dass das manipulatives Filmemachen ist, aber ich wollte diese Technik benutzen, um das Publikum zu zwingen, für die Figuren Sympathie zu empfinden. (Peter Hyoguchi) (Viennale)
