Treue und Hingabe - unter diesem Gesetz steht das Leben des Mädchen Ursula. Gegen den Widerstand des Elternhauses setzt dieser junge Mensch es durch, daß er Krankenpflege erlernen und den Beruf einer Schwester ergreifen darf. Als Schülerin eines großen Schwestern-Mutterhauses wird Ursula in das Leben hineingestellt. Es ist das Jahr 1918. Sämtliche Häuser und Baracken der Anstalt sind mit Verwundeten belegt. Im Dienst an ihnen und später, als Stadtschwester in einer kleineren Stadt, erkennt sie, daß zu aller Einsatzfreudigkeit als wesentliche Voraussetzung gute und gründliche Kenntnisse gehören. Sie wird eine aufmerksame Schülerin, ein gewissenhafter Mensch und findet in dem erwählten Beruf wahre Befriedigung. Die Begegnungen mit Verwundeten und Schwestern, die Erlebnisse und Ereignisse entstammen dem Leben, der Wirklichkeit, und zwar alles: das Schwere, das Heitere, das Frohe. Heute ist es nicht anders, als damals vor rund 20 Jahren: immer gibt es kranke Menschen. Von kundiger Hand wird hier ein Berufs- und Menschenschicksal umrissen, das von einem inneren Feuer durchglüht, einen Weg geht, der nie umsonst gegangen wird, ganz gleich, wohin der Pfad später führen mag. Es ist das Schöne an diesem Buch für junge Mädchen, daß ihm nichts Unwirkliches anhaftet, und daß das Mädchen Ursula mit echter Liebe und einem festen Glauben an die innere Sauberkeit lebt und handelt.
