Content: For many years now, Johan De Wilde's work has been praised for its meticulous drawing style. The many solemnly applied layers that compose the works also hide in their folds, ever shrinking never to vanish, the Great Irony of our existence and its languages. This first monograph presents over 500 drawings, prints and collages from the early nineties to today, concluding with the epic series 'Hands of Time'. The book includes an essay by Hans Theys. A must for those acquainted with De Wilde's works and a perfect introduction for all others

Content: Five years on and the acclaimed 'Hands of Time' has a sequel entitled 'Hands of Time ? Plein été'. The second part is an overview of drawings and other works from the period 2012 to 2017 and follows on seamlessly from the ?rst. Johan De Wilde?s work seems, if ever that is possible, to have become even more intense and his drawing style to explore new layers.0The drawings can be seen as the work of a human printer (man created the computer in his own image). They are built up like paintings: a labour-intensive process, layer upon layer of horizontal and vertical lines interwoven with a form, a ?gure. It is as if he is drawing the canvas on which he paints with his pencils. Johan De Wilde draws real time on a scale of 1:1. While his and our time slips by, lines appear, which is another reason why almost every drawing is given the title 'History + a number. Vita brevis, ars longa.'

Content: Since the mid-nineties, Johan De Wilde (°1964, BE) has been making pencil drawings that can be considered as the work of a ?human printer?, like man created computers in his mind. The artworks are meticulous built as paintings, layer after layer of horizontal and vertical lines, with a suggestion of shapes or numbers interwoven. De Wilde draws the canvas he paints on and mostly uses the same formats: A6, A4, A2, because he wants the drawings to be as universal as possible and these are the most commonly used paper sizes in everyday life. In the periphery of this, he also creates prints, photo series, graphic art, collages and texts. His labour-intensive style is the antithesis to the fast pace of life and the transience of our overly saturated digital visual culture. The artist basically draws time, on a 1/1 scale, as his own and everyone?s time goes by, an ironic remark on Ars longa, vita brevis. This book depicts the mentioned drawing series Pars Pro Toto, Requiem ? The Long Goodbye (2017-2018), a series remembering art historian Tanguy Eeckhout and published in 2019 in the book of the same name and the continuing series Indoor Impressionismus. Also included is a never before published poem by Gust Gils and a collaboration with musician Heleen Van Haegenborgh on the subject of the infinitely continuable series Pi ? Fugue pour les survivants (2007-work in progress), part of the collection of S.M.A.K., that began with the irrational number pi and continues in a long series of numbers after the comma

Content: The book 'ik wordt' runs parallel to the exhibition of the same title -it is as such not a record of the exhibition- the book exists as exhibition. The title 'ik wordt' (I become) refers to the drawing of the same title by Johan De Wilde and to the request he addressed at 300 people to take part in a solo exhibition by associating something with one or several of his works. All texts and images, and an equal number of fragments from the Sistine Chapel ceiling fresco-a reference to an in situ work by the artist-are depicted in the book in their mutual relationship. One of the questions the artist raises, is how the work of art (and therefore also the artist) relate as form and contents to the outside world, including when it is not being looked at (at nighttime, or when the museum is closed, or when the work is stored away in the museum depot). Another issue entails a critical approach to the viewer's participation. According to De Wilde, art only exists if it is created all over again.
