Eigentlich hatte Helmer nie vor, den väterlichen Hof in Zeeland zu übernehmen. Doch der frühe Unfalltod seines Bruders zwang ihn, sein Studium abzubrechen und seinem Vater zu helfen. Nun ist er Mitte 50 und will endlich sein eigenes Leben leben. Er bringt seinen demenzkranken Vater im oberen Stockwerk unter, entrümpelt das untere und wirft dabei auch etlichen Seelenballast ab. - "Oben ist es still" ist die leise, sachte Geschichte einer Selbstfindung, aber auch einer Vater-Sohn-Beziehung, die, bei aller durch die Pflege erzwungenen physischen Nähe, kalt und distanziert, in ihrer Gefühllosigkeit fast grausam ist. Regisseur Leopold hat für die einfühlsame Verfilmung des Romans von Gerbrand Bakker mehrere Preise und durchweg überschwengliche Kritiken bekommen. Eine besondere Literaturverfilmung in fahlen Farben und fast überwiegend mit der Handkamera aufgenommen. Ein Leckerbissen für Cineasten.
