Deze veranderingen creëren een Nederland dat herkenbaar is voor bezoekers van nu, met dijken om ontgonnen land, een burcht na elke rivierbocht en kerktorens aan de horizon.Het Nederland van de 10de en 11de eeuw, grotendeels bestuurd door de bisschop van Utrecht, is de noordwestelijke punt van het Heilige Roomse Rijk, geregeerd vanuit het Rijnland. De blik is meer dan nu naar het oosten gericht. De machthebbers onderhouden contacten met Rome, het Byzantijnse rijk en de rest van de wereld. In die netwerken worden kennis en verhalen verspreid, van vroeger of van ver weg. Daarmee reizen mensen in gedachten.Voor deze eeuwen is archeologie de belangrijkste bron, in combinatie met teksten en afbeeldingen in handgeschreven boeken. In schatkamers zijn kunstobjecten vol goud en edelstenen bewaard gebleven en textiel uit de hele wereld. Middenin deze periode viel de millenniumwisseling van het jaar 1000, een sleutelmoment in de christelijke tijdrekening. De verwachtingen waren hooggespannen, maar ook toen is de wereld niet vergaan.Dit rijk geïllustreerde boek, geschreven door conservator dr. Annemarieke Willemsen, verschijnt bij de gelijknamige tentoonstelling in het Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in 2023-2024.
