John Williams (1922-1994) wurde in den letzten Jahren mit beachtlichem Erfolg wiederentdeckt (zuletzt "Stoner", ID-A 37/13, und "Butcher's crossing", ID-A 11/15). "Augustus" ist der einzige Roman in seinem Oeuvre, der ihm auch zu Lebzeiten grossen Erfolg beschied (National Book Award 1973). In Form eines Briefromans erzählt der Autor die Geschichte von Octavius, der als Grossneffe und Adoptivsohn Julius Cäsars das politische Erbe des grossen Imperators übernimmt und als Kaiser Augustus (62 v.Chr. - 14 n.Chr.) eine Glanzzeit des Römischen Reiches begründet. Obgleich sich der Autor einer Romanform bedient, die viele Jahrhunderte nach dem historischen Hintergrund erfunden wurde, besticht der Roman durch exzellente Recherche, einen kunstvollen Perspektivenwechsel und glaubwürdige Zeitlosigkeit. Neben diversen Briefwechseln der wichtigsten Hauptfiguren finden sich Fragmente, Notizen, Senatsprotokolle und Tagebuchaufzeichnungen, die als immer stringenteres narratives Fresko ein geistreiches Bild über Macht und Zufall in der menschlichen Existenz ergeben
