Die spätantiken "Vitaspatrum" (4./5. Jahrhundert) sind ein Sammelwerk, das die Lebensbeschreibungen (Viten), Lehrgespräche und Sprüche ("Verba seniorum") der ersten orientalischen Eremiten und Mönche tradiert und zu den zentralen Schriften der monastischen Bewegung gehört. In der ersten Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts wurden sie im Zusammenhang mit der 'deutschen Mystik' (vor allem von Heinrich Seuse) auf Grund der in ihnen vermittelten Spiritualität stark rezipiert. Wohl in diesem Umkreis entstanden (kurz nach dem versifizierten "Väterbuch") im Südalemannischen die zwei ältesten, sich inhaltlich ergänzenden deutschen Prosaübersetzungen: 1) die Viten, die neben den Leben der wichtigsten Wüstenväter (Antonius, Paulus usw.) auch die "Historia monachorum" des Rufinus von Aquileja umfassen, und 2) die Exempel mit 365 Lehrgesprächen, Verba u.ä. Beide Werke wurden schon früh gemeinsam tradiert und waren mit 84 Hss. und 14 Drucken im ganzen deutschsprachigen Raum die mit Abstand wirkungsmächtigste der insgesamt sechs deutschen Prosaübersetzungen. Die komplexe Überlieferungs- und Textgeschichte der beiden hier unter dem Titel "Alemannische Vitaspatrum" vereinten Teile führte zu je unterschiedlichen editorischen Verfahren auf der Grundlage des überlieferungsgeschichtlichen Ansatzes. Die Ausgabe bietet neben einer Edition der 'Vulgatatexte' beider Teile Auswahlstücke aus der wichtigsten, im 15. Jahrhundert in Nürnberg entstandenen Textredaktion in synoptischer Aufbereitung sowie sämtliche im Laufe der Überlieferung hinzugekommenen Zusatztexte des Exempelteils. Der Edition beigefügt ist ein Personen- und Ortsnamenregister.
