Content: Without question, international criminal law (ICL) has become a legal growth industry. Regional supranational systems, such as the European Union, are beginning to prepare a genuine supranational criminal law that may supersede the national jurisdictions. These efforts are still in their infancy, but along with the creation of the prosecutorial framework and measures like e.g. the European Arrest Warrant, EUROPOL or EUROJUST, the defence lawyers are preparing themselves for the new challenge. It is thus useful and necessary to cover these developments from the get go. This collection of cases and materials attempts for the first time to provide a compendium of the most important legal texts, relevant documents and cases, as well as explanatory commentary on the law of defence in international criminal proceedings by scholars and practitioners who have a wealth of relevant experience in the field. The book provides students in law school courses on international human rights law and ICL with the essential materials to understand the vital importance of an adequate defence in international criminal proceedings. Further, the text gives legal practitioners who may consider extending their field of practice to the international level a look at the diversity of the tasks they will encounter and prepare them for the legal culture shock inevitable at the international tribunals and courts. This book is available for classroom adoption

Content: Globally, the methodologies of legal education have not changed in any fundamental way, some methods dating back hundreds of years. Law schools have relied, for too long, on passive learning methods such as lectures or cases. Clinical legal education provides an alternative that is more than just another pedagogical method. It provides a way for students to experience their emerging professional selves, while providing services or projects with poor and underrepresented clients. This book documents both the historical origins of clinical experiments in the earliest days of US university legal education, and the now-global reach of clinical pedagogy as a proven tool for effective training of legal professionals.
Note: Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 27 Nov 2017). , A global tour of legal education's primary teaching methods : the persistence of tradition -- Early university legal education in the United States : a pedagogy of practice from the antebellum period to 1917 -- The earliest legal clinics : dispensaries, clinics, the legal aid connection, and the roots of a movement, 1870-1916 -- The clinical model in early US medical training : why law didn't follow -- Theory and clinical legal education -- Clinical legal education in Latin America -- Clinical legal education in Central and Eastern Europe -- Clinical legal education in Africa -- Clinical legal education in East Asia -- Clinical legal education in Central, Southeast, and South Asia, and the Pacific Island Nations -- Clinical legal education in the Middle East -- Clinical legal education in continental Western Europe.

Content: "There is a global revolution taking place within university legal education. It is taking place on many fronts, particularly since the dawning of the twenty-first century. The focus of this book is that ongoing and growing revolution, and it is assaulting the deepest traditions of the legal academy. The rapid global spread of clinical legal education, as a non-traditional method of instruction and as a guide to and context for socially conscious lawyering, is changing and improving the role of law schools in the preparation of students for law practice. Clinical education, as the name implies, involves law students in learning law by guided practice during law school. Ideally, that setting involves real cases, clients or other project-based work with client communities, usually with the poor or other marginalized populations without other access to counsel. Clinical education, intensely learning-focused, is challenging the dominant traditions of teacher-centric legal education: the case method, largely taught using case-books in the United States, and the lecture, still used almost exclusively in Europe and other traditional law schools throughout the world. Clinical education does not seek to overthrow that tradition, but to offer an alternative, additional route to learning, grounded in modern ideas of cognitive science and adult learning. In fact, clinical legal education is more than a method -it is pathway toward personal and professional identity for students, manifesting itself in each student's distinctly personal experience, and it is a model, not only for all professional lawyering, but particularly for one of conscience in the service of individuals, groups or populations otherwise without equal access to law or lawyers"--

Content: Like the geological treasures that surely must lie below the Athabasca glacier, some of the answers to key questions about the control of respiration remain buried. But bit by bit, year by year the ice is melting and perhaps in some areas the rocks are starting to be revealed. With a mission to advance our understanding of the emerging th th gems of respiration, the X Oxford Conference was held between 19-24 September (2006) next to the turquoise and tranquil waters of Lake Louise, in the middle of Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. Since its inauguration 30 years ago in Oxford, the Oxford Conference on mo- ling and control of breathing has been held every three years in locations spanning the globe (a list of past conferences and publications that have emerged is included in the pages that follow). The series has provided key opportunities for respiratory scientists to meet with colleagues, discuss recent advances and celebrate their field. The 2006 Lake Louise meeting was Canada's second Oxford Conference; the th previous Canadian meeting (the VII Oxford Conference) was held in 1997 at the Grandview Inn in Huntsville (Ontario) and was chaired by Richard Hughson, David Cunningham and Jim Duffin.
Note: Historical and Future Perspectives of the Control of Breathing -- Oxygen Sensing and the Carotid Body -- Respiratory Rhythm Generation -- Genes and Development -- Models of Gas Exchange -- Plasticity and Adaptation -- Neuromodulation -- Comparative Aspects -- Central Chemosensitivity -- Brainstem Mechanisms Underlying Cardio-Respiratory Control -- Multifunctional and Reconfiguring Networks -- Clinical Perspectives: Modeling and Control of Breathing (i.e., Sleep Apnea).

Content: This volume comprises the proceedings of the 10th Oxford Conference held at Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada, in September, 2006. It contains the most up-to-date research in cardio-respiratory control and its content spans the disciplines of respiratory physiology, neurobiology, modeling, and biomedical engineering. The volume will be of interest to clinicians working with patients with breathing disorders.
Content: The neuronal circuit that generates breathing, the regulation of breathing, and its integration with other physiological systems is of utmost importance to human health. However, breathing abnormalities are common, and sleep apnea alone is estimated to affect 18 million in the United States. As one of the major complications of obesity, the prevalence of sleep apnea is likely to increase in the coming years. Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS), asthma, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, and the pathophysiology of panic and related anxiety states also involve aspects of respiratory control. Integration in Respiratory Control: From Genes to Systems comprises the proceedings of the 10th Oxford Conference held at Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada, from the 19th to the 24th of September, 2006. This series of meetings was originally begun to bring physiologists and mathematicians together, in order to address critical issues in understanding the control of breathing. This volume includes the latest findings and developments at the genomic, cellular, and system levels that pertain to the physiology of cardio-respiratory control, including integrative physiology and modeling, central integration and neuromodulation, rhythm generation and plasticity, chemosensory transduction and signaling, pre- and post-natal development, and post-genomic perspectives. About the Editors: Drs. Marc J. Poulin and Richard J.A. Wilson are Associate Professors in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
