Das frühneuzeitliche Europa war geprägt durch ein altbekanntes, in dieser Epoche aber gehäuft auftretendes gesellschaftliches Phänomen: die Figur des Günstlings, der, gestützt allein auf das Vertrauen des fürstlichen Souveräns, die Fäden der Politik in den Händen hielt. Dieser 'Favorit' war nicht an Herkunft und Stand, nicht an Religion, ja nicht einmal an das Geschlecht gebunden. Es gab hochadlige Günstlinge ebenso wie solche aus dem niederen Adel oder bürgerliche, protestantische und katholische (hier oft im Kardinalsrang) und ebenso weibliche Günstlinge, in der Gestalt der Mätresse. Gemeinsam war ihnen allen, dass sie ihren rasanten gesellschaftlichen Aufstieg vor allem der informellen Nähe zum Herrscher verdankten und deswegen rechtfertigen mussten. Dieser Rechtfertigung diente in besonderem Masse die wohldurchdachte, oft schon zu Lebzeiten in Auftrag gegebene Stilisierung ihres Andenkens durch kostspielige Grabmonumente
