Skulptur und Architektur spielen in den jüngeren bildwissenschaftlichen Diskussionen der Kunstgeschichte allenfalls eine untergeordnete Rolle. Zu Unrecht, wie Gundolf Winters Schriften zeigen, in denen er die Frage nach dem Ikonischen in der Auseinandersetzung mit dreidimensionalen Bildern aufgeworfen hat. Während das Nachdenken über das Bild im Sinne des Flächenbildes eine dichte kunsttheoretische und ästhetische Tradition besitzt, können medien- und bildästhetische Bestimmungen der Skulptur und der Architektur weniger aus der Theorie, als in der anschaulichen Auseinandersetzung mit diesen Bildformen gewonnen werden. Das zentrale Anliegen der hier versammelten Texte Gundolf Winters ist es, den Prozess des Sehens von Skulptur und Architektur als bildstiftenden Akt zu rekonstruieren.
