Der Einsatz von Social Media gehört in der Öffentlichkeitsarbeit größerer Bibliotheken heute zum Alltag. Die breite Mehrheit der deutschen Universitäts-, Staats- und Landesbibliotheken ist mittlerweile auf den gängigen Plattformen wie Facebook, Twitter oder Instagram aktiv; nur wenige Einrichtungen verzichten darauf. Die vorliegende Arbeit ist als exemplarisch-vergleichende Studie angelegt: 50 ausgewählte bundesdeutsche und internationale Bibliotheken werden daraufhin untersucht, wie bei ihnen Social-Media-Arbeit im Blick auf die gewählten Kanäle, Publikationsfrequenz und vermittelte Inhalte, Kommunikationsstile, Zielgruppenorientierung und mediale Strategien gestaltet wird und wieweit damit das Ziel der Gewinnung möglichst vieler Rezipienten und einer möglichst lebhaften digitalen Interaktion mit den Nutzern erreicht wird. Die personelle Ausstattung der Social-Media-Teams, die Abläufe der praktischen Redaktionsarbeit und die interne Einbindung in die Strukturen der jeweiligen Bibliothek stehen darüber hinaus im Fokus der Analyse. Aus den gewonnenen Ergebnissen werden Schlussfolgerungen gezogen zu der Frage, was heute als „Best Practice“ für den Social-Media-Einsatz größerer, vor allem wissenschaftlicher Bibliotheken gelten kann
