Ihr Lied 〉〉Gracias a la vida〈〈 machte Violeta Parra unsterblich. Es wurde von Mercedes Sosa und Joan Baez gesungen und gilt als wichtigste Hymne der Bewegung der 〉〉Nueva Canción Chilena〈〈, die in den 1950er Jahren die traditionelle Volksmusik Chiles mit Gesellschaftskritik verknüpfte und zum wichtigen Symbol der lateinamerikanischen Protestbewegung wurde. Violeta Parra zog von Dorf zu Dorf, schrieb die Lieder der einfachen Leute auf, komponierte eigene, wurde Malerin, Bildhauerin und Töpferin und hatte als erste Lateinamerikanerin eine Ausstellung im Louvre in Paris. Mit diesem Film hat der ebenfalls aus Chile stammende Filmemacher Andrés Wood (der in Deutschland mit 〉〉Machuca, mein Freund〈〈 bekannt wurde) ihr nun ein beeindruckendes Porträt gewidmet.
