Der Zukunftsglaube der Moderne war immer mit Vorstellungen der Neugestaltung der Welt verbunden. Im Bereich der Stadtplanung hatte der Osten gegenüber dem Westen dabei den Vorteil des leichteren Zugriffs auf den im Sozialismus vergesellschafteten Grund und Boden. Entsprechend wurden in der DDR für praktisch jede Stadt utopische Konzepte einer sozialistischen Umgestaltung entwickelt. Verwirklicht worden sind sie aber in ganz unterschiedlicher Weise; der Umfang der Kriegszerstörungen und der Beräumungen und damit die Notwendigkeit zum Handeln, politische Ambitionen und lokaler Eigensinn sowie nicht zuletzt die latente Ressourcenknappheit führten dazu, dass diese Pläne die Innenstädte in sehr unterschiedlicher Weise prägten und noch prägen. Vier Beispiele aus Thüringen werden im vorliegenden Band dargestellt. Die vielfältige Städtestruktur Thüringens lässt das Spektrum des Gewünschten und Möglichen, Realisierten und eben auch Gescheiterten besonders anschaulich zeigen. Jede der vier hier diskutierten Städte zeigt darüber hinaus Eigenheiten, die sie unverwechselbar machen und ihr ein spezifisches Profil geben: die "Klassikerstadt", Weimar, Erfurt als kurzzeitige Landeshauptstadt, die ihr Selbstverständnis wesentlich auf ihre Bedeutung im Mittelalter abstützt, Suhl, der Industriestandort im Thüringer Mittelgebirge, der zur Bezirksstadt aufstieg, und schließlich der Wintersportort Oberhof, der zum "sozialistischen St. Moritz" werden sollte. Zu allen vier Orten wird in den Beiträgen des Buches neues Archivmaterial erschlossen. Für Erfurt und Weimar ergänzen und vertiefen die Studien das bereits bekannte Bild der Planungsgeschichte der DDR-Zeit, während die Darstellungen zu den Umgestaltungen von Suhl und Oberhof eigentliche Pionierarbeiten sind. Sie sind umso verdienstvoller, als an beiden Orten die "sozialistische Umgestaltung" tatsächlich zu erheblichen Teilen realisiert worden ist, die dabei vorgesehenen Konzepte aber in den inzwischen erneut transformierten Stadtzentren nur mehr schwer ablesbar sind.
